Aim:To determine the prevalence of hypertension and its risk factors in the Guangxi Mulao population. Methods:A total of1055subjects of Mulao nationality and969subjects of Han nationality aged15-90years were surveyed by a stratified randomized cluster sampling. The data of blood pressure, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), serum lipid and apolipoprotein (Apo) levels were obtained and compared between the two ethnic groups. Results:The prevalence of hypertension was39.0%in Mulao and32.0%in Han (P<0.001). The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension was also higher in Mulao than in Han (11.8%vs.8.3%, P<0.001). The mean levels of systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure were higher in Mulao than in Han (131.71±22.45vs.128.06±18.67mmHg, P<0.001and49.87±17.05vs.47.65±13.71mmHg, P<0.001, respectively;1mmHg=0.133kPa). The prevalence of hypertension was positively correlated with age, serum ApoB levels and BMI in Mulao, whereas the prevalence of hypertension was positively correlated with serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) level sand sex in Han. The rates of awareness, treatment and control for hypertension in the Mulao and Han populations were20.9%vs.29.7%, 13.8%vs.22.6%, and2.9%vs.6.8%; respectively (P<0.05for all). Conclusion:The prevalence of hypertension is higher in Mulao than in Han, which may attribute to specific geographical characteristics, different lifestyles, greater salt intake, lower education level, and genetic risk factors. The lower rates of awareness, treatment and control in Mulao for hypertension warn people to take some i nterventions.
