Objective:Electrical status epilepticus during sleep (ESES), whose incidence is0.2%0.5%of all childhood epilepsies, occurring in children with and without epilepsyis a typical electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern characterized by continuousepileptiform activity for more than85%of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.ESES consists of a series of epilepsy syndromes with different etiological factors, clinical manifestations and prognosis and there is no classic treatment method up to now. This study analyzed the effect of LEV on27children with ESES and inquired into theclinical feasibility of applying LEV.Methods:27children with ESES who initially visited our hospital from Aug.2009to Mar.2011were divided into2groups (Group A and Group B) according to the phaseof LEV administration. To analyze the effect of LEV, these children were followed formore than6months and seizure control and ESES suppression were observed. Results:Age of onset of27patients (male:17, female:10) was ranged from9months to9years and7months. Partial motion seizure was the major pattern of onset in89%patients.23patients in Group A took LEV after ESES was diagnosed, of which19cases were diagnosed as epilepsy syndrome of benign childhood epilepsy withcentrotemporal spikes (BECT). Age of using LEV was ranged from1years and8months to13years and2months. After a719months follow-up interval, the effectiverate of LEV on seizure control was82%and on EEG recovery was78%.The effectiverate of the former surpass the later statistically (P=0.0008<0.05). In addition, therewere4patients (15%) of Group B who presented ESES after LEV administration. Conclusion: We suggest that LEV can be considered as a frst-line therapy forpatients with ESES since our study showed the signifcant improvement of clinical signsand EEG pattern after the introduction of LEV. The effectiveness of LEV may not involve prevent the presentation of ESES for there were4patients diagnosed with ESESafter LEV administration.
