Objective:To detect the positive expression of CD68, CD163in women with endometriosisas well as its correlation with microvessel density(MVD)and investigate the role ofM2-polarized Macrophages in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Methods:We employ the CD68, CD163and CD34to mark macrophages, M2-polarizedmacrophage and MVD respectively. Immunohistochemical method(Envision)wasused to detect the expression of CD68, CD163and MVD in ectopic endometrialspecimens obtained from35patients, eutopic endometrial specimens from20patientswith endometriosis and20normal endometrial tissue samples as control group. Theresults were analyzed by the SPSS17.0software.Results:1. The number of CD68+and CD163+macrophages and the MVD were muchhigher in ectopic and eutopic endometrial groups of endometriosis than those in thenormal control(P﹤0.01);2. The number of CD68+and CD163+macrophages and the MVD had nosignificant difference between the clinical stage of I-II and III-IV of the pelvicendometriotic lesions(P﹥0.05);3. The number of CD68+and CD163+macrophages and the MVD had nosignificant difference between proliferative phase and secretory phase both inexperimental and control group(P﹥0.05);4. The MVD in ectopic endometrial group was positively correlated with thenumber of CD68+and CD163+macrophages (r=0.754, P﹤0.01; r=0.808, P﹤0.01);5. The MVD in eutopic endometrial group of endometriosis was positivelycorrelated with the number of CD68+and CD163+macrophages (r=0.762, P﹤0.01;r=0.829, P﹤0.01).Conclusion:1. The M2-polarized macrophages play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of endometriosis.2. Microangiogenesis is among the key steps in the pathogenesis anddevelopment of endometriosis, M2-polarized macrophages are closely correlated withthe microangiogenesis in endometriosis.3. Blocking the differentiation of macrophages into the M2subtype in the localmicroenvironment may become the potentially new approach in the therapy ofendometriosis.
