Potentilla discolor Bunge, recorded first in the "Herbal for Relief of Famines", was the whole plant with roots of Potentilla discolor Bunge from potentilla of Rosaceae. As recorded in "Compendium of Materia Medica’ Potentilla discolor Bunge had effectiveness such like reducing fever, cooling the blood, detoxification, bleeding swelling and so on, for the treatment of dysentery, malaria, carbuncles, and different kinds of bleeding. At present use of Potentilla discolor Bunge in market is confused. For example, Potentilla aiscolor Bunge was often used as Potentilla discolor Bunge, and led to allergic reactions such like abdominal distension, abdominal pain, diarrhea, body itching, lips swelling, rash and so on. Therefore, this article studied medicinal property, microscopic identification, physical and chemical identification and other aspects of pharmacognosy of Potentilla discolor Bunge and other10kinds of Potentilla. This study also indicated systematically the chemical composition of Potentilla discolor Bunge, Established methods to identify, therefore provided reliable basis of application of it。According to observing characteristics of cross-section and powder of roots, stems and leaves of Potentilla discolor Bunge and Potentilla, we find that there were the same points and also large differences. For example, in cross-section of the roots and stems, distribution and arrangement of the tube and the overall morphology of vascular varied widely, which could be as identification features.Differences of leaves were mainly that there were more non-glandular hairs with Potentilla. Powder characteristics between the two were almost the same. Their common features:calcium oxalate crystal clusters contained in roots, stems, leaves and other parts; the same type of catheter in all parts; the prevalence of non-glandular in stems and leaves; fiber contained in stems. This study established method for determining the essay of total flavonoids in Potentilla discolor by UV spectrophotometry and method for determination of essay of quercetin in Potentilla discolor by HPLC. At the same time, content of total flavonoids and quercetin in10batches of Potentilla discolor Bunge were determined. In order to extend the time of hypoglycemic effect of Potentilla discolor Bunge and increase its bioavailability, this paper study preparation method of sustained-release capsules of total flavonoids of Potentilla discolor, with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and ethyl cellulose (EC) as matrix material, starch as filler. Fomula of sustained-release capsules of total flavonoids of Potentilla discolor Bunge was established by single factor and orthogonal design:total flavonoids16g, Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose K15M16g, Ethyl Cellulose16g, starch2g. At result good release effect was got.
