Objective: To study clinical effect of unilateral percutaneous kyphoplasty intreating patients with osteoporotic compression fractures. Methods: Twenty six patients (52vertebraes)dated from November2005to December2011of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture had appliedvertebral body balloon-type expander for expansion of the diseased vertebraeand bone cement filling through the pain visual analogue score VAS and thelumbago JOA score compared before and after surgery and the changes invertebral height and sum up the effect of the surgery. Results: All operations were successful. Although there were sevenvertebraes with cement leakage: two cases with anterior bone cement leakage, one case with disc leakage, two cases with pedicle leakage, two cases with thevertebral vein leakage, all have no neurological symptoms. All cases werefollowed up for1month to5years. The VAS score before surgery was4~8points with an average of6.83±0.34points after surgery2to6points an averageof3.58±0.24points.And the lumbago JOA score before surgery was14~19points with an average of16.13±0.46points after surgery19to24points an average of21.57±0.39points. Moreover, preoperative vertebral body height wassignificantly recovered. The average preoperative vertebral body height of thefront13.45±2.43mm after surgery an average height of vertebral body front19.51±2.26mm and the average preoperative vertebral body height of theposterior20.18±2.12mm after surgery an average height of vertebral bodyposterior22.49±2.35mm and the average preoperative vertebral body height ofthe middle10.32±2.45mm after surgery an average height of vertebral bodymiddle16.21±2.07mm. Preoperation and postoperation data were different(P <0.05). vertebral front45.05percent recovery rate and vertebral posterior11.45percent recovery rate and vertebral middle57.07percent recovery rate. Conclusion: The unilateral percutaneous kyphoplasty technique has theadvantages of relieving the pain rapidly and effectively and recovering theheight of sick vertebrae effectively and correcting the abnormality of posteriorbulge of vertebral and improving the quality of the patients life. Thus, it is a safe, effective and minimalinvasive way to treat osteoporotic vertebral compressionfracture.
