Objective:To observe the expression of the matrixmetalloproteinases-1(MMP-1) and the tissue inhibitor of metal-loproteinases-2(TIMP-2) in nucleus pulposus cells and the fibrous ring cells of intervertebral disc degeneration.Method:Immunohistochemistry assay were used to detect the expression of the MMP-1and the TIMP-2in nucleus pulposus cells and the fibrous ring cells in40cases. Experimental group were made from30cases with lumbar disc protrusion disease and control group were made from10cases of lumbar spine fracture in traumatic.Result:The expression of MMP-1in degenerated discs was higher than the normal discs(P<0.01).The expression of TIMP-2in degenerated discs was higher than the normal discs(P<0.01), and In the amount of nucleus pulposus superior to fiber ring, There was significant difference in the MMP-1and TIMP-2expression level between the sequestration and transligamentous extrusion,between the extrusion and protrusion, between the control group and protrusion. The MMP-1and TIMP-2in the disc nucleus pulposus and fiber ring cell of control group.Conclusion:The expression degree and disc degeneration degree were positively correlated; MMP-1and TIMP-2may participate in the degeneration of human intervertebral discs, they are very important in the degeneration of cartilage in disc degeneration.
