Multi-hole steel plate based on traditional high hardness steel plate is a kind of technique for anti small caliber kinetic projectile (KP), having both good processing property and economical efficiency. The purpose of this subject is to determine the trend of the anti small caliber KP performance of the multi-hole steel plate influenced by factors such as structure parameters of the multi-hole steel plate like diameter of the hole, distance between the holes and thickness of the plate, the experiment conditions like the normal angle, clearance of the back-effect-target and the hitting positions etc. It is basic to design and application of the multi-hole steel plate.During the period the subject is studied, ballistic performance test and numerical simulation are combined to determine the performance of the multi-hole steel plate protecting against14.5AP when the structure parameters and experiment conditions are varied. The result of the study shows that the diameter of the hole should be smaller than the diameter of the core of the small caliber KP. Comparing with the high hardness steel plate sharing the same material, thickness and experiment condition, the multi-hole steel plate can improve the performance of anti small caliber KP as the decrease in weight is about40%, especially when the normal angle is small. But when the normal angle is increased, the angle effect of the high hardness steel plate appears and the advantage of the multi-hole steel plate on anti small caliber KP decreases gradually. The damage area of the multi-hole steel plate is proportional to its ballistic performance. When the hitting position is among three holes, the damage area is the largest and ballistic performance is also the best. Based on the same reason, when the hitting position is in center of the hole, the multi-hole steel plate has the worst ballistic performance. As the distance between multi-hole steel plate and back effect target is increasing, its ballistic performance also improves obviously. For multi-hole steel plate with fixed diameter of the hole and distance between the holes, in certain range of thickness, the ballistic performance is increased with the thickness.
