Objective:This study is to investigate the effects of the Prorioceptive Derivation theory on the dentists’work&gesture and the musculoskeletal system’s health by using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment and questionnaire.Methods:64dentists were randomly selected from the hospitals in Jinan. The range for the experimental subject age was35to56years. These sixty-four experimental subjects were divided into4groups according to the different departments (group A:16persons in orthodontics department; group B:16persons in endodontics, periodontal, and department; group C:16persons in prosthodontics department; group D:16persons in maxillofacial surgery department). Two biggest-angle postures of their customary and PD standardization operations were observed, recorded in both groups by the same professional observer. Then by using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), the investigator calculated the mean scores and look up for the action level. In the meanwhile, before and after the PD theoretical guidance, the questionnaire survey were filled to get the information about fatigue and pain of the subjects.Result:1. When the dentists adopt the customary operation, all of them reported the fatigue in the dental work because of high work-load, inappropriate position. Three months after the PD theoretical guidance,87.5%of the subjects reported that their fatigue were greatly relieved.2. Before the PD theoretical guidance, all of the dentists reported that they had work-related pains; the NRS scores are at a high level. After the PD theoretical guidance, the NRS score lowers obviously, but there is no significant difference.(P>0.05)3. The difference of RULA scores was highly significant in Group A, B, C, D before and after the PD standardization.(P<0.05) But there is no significant difference between them (T>0.05).4. There is a significantly positive relationship between NRS score, seniority and the RULA score.(P<0.05). The dentists who have a long seniority always have more severe pain situation, higher RULA score and action level.5. There is a significantly negative relationship between the change value of the RULA score and the dentists’seniority.Conclusion:1. The dentists who are used to adopt the habituation position and gesture generally have higher NRS score, higher RULA scores and action level, therefore they endure a higher risk of occupational disease.2. The dentists who adjust their position and gesture under the guidance of the PD concept have a lower NRS score, RULA score, action level and risk of occupational disease. It can be seen that PD theory is obvious beneficial for most of the dentists, which reduce the risk of dentists in MSDs.3. The sooner you acquaint yourself with the importance of the PD theory and accept instruction and related training, the easier you discard bad work position and gesture, restore and reverse the musculoskeletal injury, the more effective you guarantee the dentists’health and extend the professional career.
