When the judge of the royal Swedish academy Ma Yueran was interviewed by news report, he commented that "there is labyrinth everywhere in life. If we say Kafka put men into his fable, then J.M.Coetzee put his fable into the living life". As a writer, especially a novelist, the excellence of J.M.Coetzee is the universality and transcendence of his works. By describing the state of the individual’s survival under the particular spatiotemporal condition, they display the pantophobia, which is the human destiny that destined by the human nature. His works were permeated with strong painful sense of survival deep down to his soul, showing his sympathy for the disadvantaged groups, his treasuring the life of the individuals and his concern for the weakness of human nature, which revealed Coetzee’s compassionate humanistic care.J.M.Coetzee is a writer with great sense of historic mission who cares a lot about human living condition. We can see that from each of his work. In this thesis, we try to explore his work from three aspects:the causes, presentation and deep contemplation of Coetzee’s awareness of survival. The introduction of this thesis gives an account of Coetzee’s life and his works, and an overview of the research status quo both at home and abroad. Base on this, we further extend the research into three partsChapter one is Coetzee’s unique personal life experience. With the analysis of the experience of his growth, including the facts which further include English traditional literature and thinking and South Africa’s particular historical, political and humanistic environment that influence him, we began to know about the unique reason that caused him to develop such thinking and its influence on him.Chapter two is an interpretation of awareness of survival in his novel. With an analysis of the characters in his novel especially the one who suffered a lot, we try to dig out the deep compassion and sympathy in the reader in the process of feeling the difficulty of living and the tenacity of life. Chapter three is Coetzee’s pondering over and search for the proposition of survival. By analyzing his questioning and reflecting on history, his yearning and seeking for freedom, his challenging and criticizing on civilization, we elaborate the rational promotion of proposition of survival in J.M.Coetzee’s novels.
