The temporal spirit, expressiveness and nationality of the artistic creation are the common characteristics of the world art, and the visualization of the large amount of information and the rapid development of the economy have promoted the multi-style development of the contemporary painting. The discussion and analysis of the shock to China’s contemporary figurative oil painting from the image culture in different historical periods and under cultural backgrounds have revealed that the key problem is the visualization of China’s contemporary figurative oil painting, which is also the most urgent problem that calls for common concern and solution. In the era of image culture, although the image culture has promoted the development and prosperity of China’s contemporary figurative oil paintings objectively, it has also created the crisis of the figurative oil painting at the same time of providing potential vitality for figurative oil painting. Due to the shock of the image culture, China’s contemporary figurative oil painting lacks of necessary humane care in its blind creation. The greatest shock of the image culture to the development of China’s contemporary figurative oil paintings is that the oil painters pay more attention to the surface information of the images only, which has resulted in the poor mental quality of the oil paintings. Therefore, enhancing the mental outlook, personality traits and moral responsibility of oil painters is pressing. During the development of China’s contemporary figurative oil painting, it is inevitable to suffer from the shock of the image culture, while the characteristics of China’s contemporary figurative oil painting, the inner thoughts conveyed by it and its diverse forms are exactly in line with the development trends of the contemporary painting art and will inevitably have a huge development space. Therefore, only when we think deeply and make clear the dialectical relationship between the image culture and China’s contemporary figurative oil painting, can the development of China’s oil painting be better promoted.
