This paper is a thematic study of Xiao Ziliang, the Jingling King in Nanqi Dynasty.Xiao Ziliang is the second son of Emperor QiWu, and the younger brother of theCrown Princesses Wen Hui. He is the leader of the “Jing Ling Eight Friends” LiteratiGroup, and he was also involved in literature creation, and lived his life on it; but thecurrent study are mostly focused on his activities on Buddhism, politics, and the “JingLing Eight Friends”. This paper commences through literature, and based on literatureto appreciate and analysis his works, generalize and surmise his writing style, dig thecorrelation between his literal propositions and other forms of arts (Chinesecalligraphy), and to re-establish his status in the Southern Dynasty Literature history.The discussion in this paper will be carried out through the following five aspects:Part one will discuss the social and cultural background of Xiao Qi literature andXiao Ziliang who lived under this background. Part two will discuss Xiao Ziliang’sliterature creation on his poems, verses, and articles, etc., three aspects. The third partwill generalize and sum up Xiao Ziliang’s writing style: the writing mentality ofwriting as entertainment, and the aesthetic tendency of pursing truth and suppleness.Part four will bring out the innovation of this paper: the discussion will not be limitedto literature anymore, rather, connect Xiao Ziliang’s literature activities to his Chinesecalligraphy, and probe into the connection between his literation propositions and hisChinese calligraphy practice through his works. Based on Xiao Ziliang’s relationshipwith literati in Yong Ming Time and his contribution to the Yong Ming Time literature,part five will discuss his status in Southern Dynasty literature history.
