Semantic field is a term referring to the linguistic phenomenon that the vocabulary is anintegrated system which is interrelated in sense and can be divided into semantically relatedsets or fields. The words in a semantic field are joined together according to the core meaningof the common concept the words carry, and they are likely to have a number of collocationsin common. Words in each semantic field define each other in terms of the related lexicalsense. It was the French scholar G.Ipsen who first proposed the term “semantic field” in1924.J. Trier constructed Semantic Field Theory in the early1930’s, and he is regarded as thefounder of the theory. In the1970s, John Lyons proposed that words related in any sensebelonged to the same semantic field, and the semantic field was simply a lexical category, which he described as a lexical field. Scholars in China also have remarkable achievements ofsemantic field as well. Sun Mingliang defines “semantic field” as “existing occasions andapplication scopes of meanings”, and he gives illustrations on this definition with fivesub-classifications divided in terms of the interpretations in the dictionary. Wang Qin holdsdifferent views for these phenomena. Thus, it is helpful for further development of semanticstudy and for avoiding ambiguous of terms. When studying semantic field, the most importantstep is that a clear boundary of semantic field should be made, so that the scale of semanticfield can be confirmed and afterwards a scientific description is possible. The paper focuses on the semantic field theory and makes a research on the relationshipbetween semantic field theory and translation of A Dream of Red Mansions. Chapter one is abrief introduction on the research background. Chapter two mainly talked about the origin, types, features and functions of semantic field theory, and got a conclusion that semantic fieldtheory is quite useful for translation. Chapter three is about the application in the translationof A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspective of semantic field, and this chapter isdivided into two parts to make studies on the kinship terms and color terms. Chapter four isabout the semantic fuzziness in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions from theperspective of semantic field, for fuzziness is a desirable feature of natural language. Fuzzyexpressions can perform the particular functions which help to create a humorous effect. Thelast chapter is the conclusion part, and there is an important link between semantic field theory and translation; and the paper gives readers and translators some hints and help inapplying semantic field theory while translation A Dream of Red Mansions.
