| The Scholars is a classical Chinese literature with high academic value, and it depicts thetraditional Chinese ethics, custom and daily life, characterized with the feudal imperialexamination system from a scholar’s view and values for the first time, which presents ahistorical picture to readers. Those rich cultural factors are, in particular, embodied incultural-loaded words. Therefore, their translation matters the successful representation ofclassical Chinese feudal culture. The author, after studying the semantic translation and communicative translation byPeter Newmark as well as the translation thoughts of Yang Hsienyi and his wife Gladys Yang, finds out: semantic and communicative translation are both used in the translation process. InYangs’ opinion, as foreign readers try their best to learn the classical Chinese culture, weshould make full preparation for a successful cultural exchange. After application ofNewmark’s semantic and communicative translation theory and the analysis of The Scholarstranslated by Yangs, the following conclusion is reached: in order to achieve the best culturalexchange, we should make detailed analysis about the typical meaning of different culturalwords, any translation strategy cannot satisfy translation needs by its own because of culturalcomplexity in literature works. It necessarily demands the other one auxiliary. Therefore, weshould analyze the translating methods objectively and scientifically by combining thespecific culture context and considering the purpose and some other factors of the translation.Only the translation like that can retain the cultural features of the source language by thegreatest extent and make sure the target readers can appreciate the national features of theoriginal text. It will make an active significance on the mutual communication and thedevelopment of the literatures with different cultures, as well as provide a new idea for thetranslation of the cultural-loaded words. The thesis is mainly made up of five parts. Part one is the introduction, involving thepurpose of the study, study background, significance and the structure of the thesis. Part twocovers a general literal review on The Scholars and different translated versions includingYangs’ translated version. Part three is the theoretical basis, that is, the semantic andcommunicative translation of Peter Newmark and Yangs’ translation thoughts. Through the adaptation of Peter Newmark coupled with the Yangs’ translation method, the translation ofthe cultural-loaded words in the novel is studied in a detailed and deep approach. Based onthe above discussion, the translation of cultural-loaded words in the novel is discussedcarefully on the basis of different aspects in part four, the unclear and verbose translation ispicked out in this thesis, and the author provides suggested translation of some of thecultural-loaded words. The author of the thesis draws the conclusion in part five. Whiletranslating the cultural-loaded words, translators could make good use of the semantic and thecommunicative translation method to reserve the characteristic of Chinese cultural. |
