An Analysis On Chinese Culture-loaded Words In The English Version Of The Dream Of Ding Village From The Perspective Of Peter Newmark’s Translation Theory

In the modern world now, the pace of globalization is becoming more and more fast. And it is no doubt that cultural globalization is also an overwhelming trade. At the same time the importance of inter-cultural communication is growing to a prominent place. Translation is considered as one of the most important ways to realize the effective inter-cultural communication. As more and more Chinese literary works have been translated into English, Chinese culture and literature have spread around the world. The people around the world who have different cultural backgrounds all have the same chance to understand Chinese culture in a proper way. In literary works, the cultural meanings are always based on or hide in the cultural-loaded words. So the translations of these words play key roles in literature translation.The Dream of Ding Village is a masterpiece of Chinese modern writer, Yan Lianke. He pursues and specializes in local writings, and this book is the first time to write the theme of AIDS stories in China. Yan Lianke sets the background in a village in Henan Province, creates many distinctive and vivid rural characters, and builds an atmosphere filling of dark, despair and death. A lot of cultural-loaded words in this book have their strong cultural color. This thesis has explored and analyzed the translation methods of cultural-loaded words in The Dream of Ding Village under Peter Newmark’s translation strategies - "semantic translation", "communicative translation" and "a correlative approach to translation".In this thesis, firstly, made a literature review of Newmark’s translation theory, the conception and classify of cultural-loaded words and the researches of The Dream of Ding Village both in Chinese and English versions. Secondly, classified the cultural loaded words in The Dream of Ding Village and gave many examples to distinguish these different classifications clearly. Then, applied Newmark’s translation methods ---"semantic translation", "communicative translation" and "a correlative approach to translation" to analyze the translations of cultural-loaded words in The Dream of Ding Village. Finally, made a conclusion through the detail analysis. For semantic translation, translators always use literal translation, imitating translation and transliteration. For communicative translation, translators always use free translation, substitution and addition translation. For the correlative approach to translation, translators use the semantic and communicative translations neatly to translate the representative cultural-loaded words, in order to use a better way to retain the cultural connotations and features of the source language.In addition, this paper also try to explore some other translation phenomenon in the English version of The Dream of Ding Village, such as mistranslation because of cultural misunderstandings and so on. Hope these would make some advices to the further research.
