"Compensation with creation" theory is one of the important translation theories putforth by Professor Xu Yuanchong. The theory is a reflection of "creative spirit"advocated by the professor in literary translation. Actually,"Compensation with creation"is an application of "creative spirit". Professor Xu Yuanchong believes that it can makeup for the loss generated in translation to perform creative spirit on the basis of thesource text in translation. He also thinks that "compensation with creation" can open anew prospect for literary translation. He illustrates his "compensation with creation"theory through his poetry translation, from which readers can easily find common pointsshared by both the professor and western hermeneutics. However, it is a pity that thereare a few explorations of the inner relationship between "compensation with creation"theory and hermeneutics. The present thesis aims to explore the theoretical origin of "compensation withcreation" theory from the perspective of Hermeneutics theory. And it mainly focuses onthe cause, process, motivation and criterion of "compensation with creation". Actuallythe theory "compensation with creation" itself is concluded on the basis of Professor XuYuanchong’s translation practice. Therefore, some of his translation cases areunavoidably used to give explanations in the thesis. The thesis lays emphasis on the theoretical exploration of "compensation withcreation" theory. Western theories in the present thesis, which are more systematic, aretaken advantage of to make up for the weakness of the Chinese traditional theory—"compensation with creation".The thesis has a clear structure in theory illustration. The arrangements of thestructure from the third chapter to the fifth one are almost the same. Professor XuYuanchong’s ideas on the cause, process, motivation and criterion of "compensation withcreation" are shown firstly. Then Hermeneutics theories are used to support andsupplement the professor’s. Those translation cases from Professor Xu Yuanchong are ofgreat help in revealing the relationship between "compensation with creation" theory andthe Hermeneutics theory. Cases from the third chapter to the fifth in the present thesis aremostly from the book Literature and Translation written by Professor Xu Yuanchong in2003. The book indeed provides abundant first hand materials and huge referenceresources for the writing of the present thesis.
