Diplomatic language is a tool by which diplomatic activities are conducted. Itembodies the foreign policies of a country, which also defends the optimal interests of thecountry. As H. Nicholson says, the most universal meaning of diplomatic language is“guarded statement that enables diplomats to speak impolite things without beingimpolite or provocative”.While Conceptual Blending Theory, was brought forward by Fauconnier in Westerncognitive linguistic domain. He thought that the conceptual networks are complexlyfounded by mental-space mapping, which play an important part in meaning construction. It is proved that prototypical blending networks consist of four different mental spaces:two input domains, a generic space and a blend. It is believed that Conceptual Blending Theory could be applied to the interpretationof meaning mechanism of diplomatic language in a deep meticulous way. The centralconcepts such as mental space, cross-space mapping and integration networks areintroduced in this thesis to explain the phenomenon of diplomatic language. In the framework of this theory, meaning construction is regarded as a cognitive process, andcomprehension of utterances as a cognitive activity. During the course of diplomaticlanguage interpretation, a mental space is established in different parts by applyingstructures from conceptual fields. We can build different spaces by applying structures toresemble conceptual fields. A basic stimulating element for blending is the blending ofsome matters into one set. Inputs can be internal links which are stimulatedexperimentally and conceptually. Like other kinds of actions and thoughts, blending canbe established or novel. It can fuse counterparts in input spaces. Besides, it can combinenon-counterpart elements that come from different inputs. This thesis attempts to analyze diplomatic language from a fresh viewpoint, theConceptual Blending Theory, studied the structure of diplomatic context. It also discussesthe elements that affect the function of diplomatic language and their applicationmechanism. In addition, the familiar relationship between dynamic context and certainlanguage appearance in diplomatic language are covered. One of the benefits of theresearch findings is that it can help people have a better understanding of the diplomaticlanguage which changes with each passing day. Diplomatic agent could have acomprehensive consideration about the influence of dynamic context in theunderstanding and application of diplomatic language. In reality, diplomatic languageusers’ pragmatic competence would be enhanced greatly by choosing and judgingdiplomatic language felicitously; their efficiency and control over their diplomaticactivities would be enhanced, thus achieving successful communication ultimately.
