College English as a compulsory course in college is taken by millions ofuniversity students each year. To ensure the effective college English teaching andlearning, the textbook is of vital importance. The present study analyzes the use of NewCollege English Integrated Course, the college English textbook for most of the collegestudents, in the classes selected from the national élite courses which are approved bythe Ministry of Education on the criteria of teaching faculty, teaching content, teachingmethod, teaching materials and teaching management.This thesis surveys five national élite courses College English classes in whichNew College English Integrated Course is adopted as their textbook. By observing theclassroom videos, this thesis conducts a comprehensive study on the textbook use innational élite courses in terms of teaching approach, teaching procedures and teachingcontent. The study intends to reveal the characteristics of the use of New CollegeEnglish Integrated Course as textbook and ultimately to improve and enhance thequality of college English teaching in China. Enlightened by Gu Xiangdong’s classroomobservation scheme, this investigation covers the following aspects:1) teachingapproach;2) activities types;3) textbook covered;4) skills practiced.Through the analysis, the major characteristics of the use of New College EnglishIntegrated Course as textbook in the national élite courses are concluded as:1)teachers combine multiple teaching methods;2) Procedures and activities are centeredon the text as well as the theme;3) Wide range of textbook content is covered,especially the text organization and words and expressions exercises;4) Emphasis onspeaking and writing are equally increased. Some innovations are discovered as well,they are:1) most of the teachers adopt Eclecticism as the results of their teachingmethods combination;2) all the teachers make the most of the characteristics oftextbook. Meanwhile, there are two disadvantages of textbook use in the national élitecourses:1) the classroom is teacher-centered so that there is inadequate T&S interaction;2) Few open activities are carried out hence the non-language competences are not fullypracticed.
