Robert De Niro is a very famous film artist. He is an excellent film actor of USMethod Acting and also the Simply Actor as recognized in the circle. He has everplayed many different roles from the poor to brave hero in films such as "Taxi Driver"in which he was Travis–an ordinary people in society,"The King of Comedy" in whichhe was Rupert–a talk show actor who was always brave to pursue his dream and the"Raging Bull" in which he was Jake LaMotta from being the King of Boxer to aprisoner and "Heat" in which he was Niel–a wise and brave, gentle and romantic, verycruel gangster. The roles he played in his films are so vivid, exciting and impressivebecause of his outstanding acting skills and distinct personal style.How could Robert De Niro create so many famous but different characterssuccessfully? This thesis tries to summarize the causes of his success and his manyyears of performing experience on creation of so many characters with differentpersonalities through analyzing, exploring and researching Robert De Niro’s growingand performing history, the types and characteristics of the roles played by him and hisperforming skills, etc. At last, this thesis defines his performing style and skill asrestraining and contrasting. I hope to obtain a more effective and more accessibleconcept that will guide film and television performances. I hope that the not-so-maturesummary could be a valuable reference for many younger actors and tries to makeChinese film performing art move toward the right track and avoid detours as soon aspossible.The introduction mainly presents some researches on Robert De Niro’sperformance as well as the main thinking ways of the research in this thesis.The second chapter explores the growing and performing experience of Robert DeNiro so as to know how he could have such unique performing style.The third chapter tries to analyze and summarize Robert De Niro’s performingcharacteristics with two elements i.e."angry" and "humorous" in his performing style,starting from the characters created by him.The fourth chapter explores some practical skills in reality from the point of DeNiro’s practice such as looking for stuff in life, excellent action design, charactercreation in details,"regional" performance and improvisation. At last, it analyzes anddefines these performing skills with strong personal style–"restraining" and "contrasting".The fifth part obtains some enlightenment from Robert De Niro’s practicalexperience and his attitude to performance and makes a summary at the aspects of acorrect cooperation between actor and director and the attitude to character creation soas to get correct and effective ways and methods.
