Zhu Gong Diao is a very popular art form in the Song and Yuan Dynasties. It is a kind ofpopular narrative literature, which was combined of a series of different Gong Diao and wasused to tell long story by singing. Zhu Gong Diao, with its great research value, takes animportant part in the Chinese literary history. Among all the Zhu Gong Diao works, Dong XiXiang is the best preserved and most highly valued. This thesis conducted a specializedresearch on the usage of adverbs in this book, hopes to fully explore the development andchanges during this period, in order to do a bit of supplementary work for the study of modernChinese.The introduction part gives a brief description of this art form Zhu Gong Diao and thecurrent study on Dong Xi Xiang. In this part, there is also an introduction to the researchvalue of Dong Xi Xiang,the study methods and research purposes of the thesis,and aconcisely clarification of the definition of adverb.Chapter II is based on an exhaustive study makes a classification and description of theadverbs appeared in "Dong Xi Xiang". It turns out there are a total of331adverbs, and theycan be classified into6categories, including adverbs that indicating degree, scope, time,circumstance&manner, tone, negation. In the process of analysis, in order to follow a clearertime-line, the author divided them into two groups: the adverbs inherited from the ancientChinese and the adverbs emerged in modern Chinese. And this thesis is mainly focused on thenewly generated adverbs. According to its own characteristic, each category was furtherclassified into certain subcategories, and then a plain description, historical and comparativestudy is made on them. Finally, the author picks out several typical adverbs with modernChinese characteristics and makes thorough research on them, aims to reveal some features ofthe usage of adverbs in modern Chinese.Chapter III points out the overall usage of Dong Xi Xiang’s adverbs systems, explains itschronological development based on the inheritance of ancient and medieval Chinese, andexamines15adverbs that first appeared in Dong Xi Xiang. Then the author summarized thefeatures of the adverbs in Dong Xi Xiang: their earthliness, their colloquial style, some of them only employed in oral literature, some others don’t even have conformed forms andwere recorded in more than two forms. A large number of adverbs were composed of two orthree syllables, and lots of synonyms are used; new usages are frequently generated from theoriginal adverbs. |
