Chinese drama, as a form of foreign arts introduced, has been developed in a deviousway for a century, for it has been impacted by the thoughts of the occidental drama andhard to get rid of the gestation of Chinese traditional culture. Aesthetic character, however,came into being in the process. The characteristic of poetic spirit presented itself in themanuscripts of modern playwrights of Tian Han, Guo Moruo, Cao Yu and Xia Yan, and itinfluenced the aesthetic pursuit of modern drama artists. Therefore, to ravel the historicalexhibition of formation, evolution and maturity of the characteristic of Chinese moderndrama’s poetic spirit, to realize its exhibition forms, to evaluate its aesthetic significance,etc, are the important subjects to the research on Chinese modern drama. To analyze andelucidate these issues is not only the summarization of the past of Chinese drama whichhelps us to understand the status of drama arts, but also is enlightening for us to hold on tothe future of Chinese drama.In Chapter Ⅰ, the opinions about the poet nature of dramatists and drama theorists atall times and in all over the world are enumerated, the poetic spirit of the importantdomestic and foreign playwrights is introduced emphatically. Importantly, thecharacteristic of Chinese modern drama’s poetic spirit is elucidated based on theunderstanding of the drama poetic spirit of scholars in the past.In Chapter Ⅱ, the exhibition form of the characteristic of Chinese modern drama’spoetic spirit is discussed in detail from the character, actor’s lines and imago in therepresentative works of Cao Yu, Xia Yan and Guo Moruo, which proves that there existsstrong the characteristic of the poetic spirit in Chinese modern dramas.In Chapter Ⅲ, the inextricably link between the formation and exhibition forms ofthe characteristic of Chinese modern drama’s the poetic spirit and classic dramas is traced.And also, drama arts of playwrights of Cao Yu, Xia Yan and Guo Moruo are enumeratedIn Chapter Ⅳ addresses itself to the relationship between the characteristic ofChinese modern drama’s poetic spirit and foreign lyric dramas. The opinion that the dramais foreign arts is confirmed, and the foreign influence to drama artists in our country is veryself-evident. Especially, the playwrights of Henrik Johan Ibsen, Аnton Chekhov andEugene O’Neill made great contribution to the formation and maturity of the characteristicof Chinese modern drama’s poetic spirit. In the conclusion section, the emphasis is further attached on characteristic of Chinesemodern drama’s poetic spirit, and the aesthetic pursuit for the poetic spirit is appealed inthe creative process of modern dramas.
