| Eileen Chang is an excellent writer with unique artistic style in the history ofChinese literature, but her role as a translator has been left obscured. The translation ofthe late-Qing fiction The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai is Eileen Chang’s greatestcontribution to introducing Chinese literature to the outside world.Devoted to the study on Eileen Chang’s translation of The Sing-song Girls ofShanghai, this thesis has conducted a panoramic research into the hybridity in TheSing-song Girls of Shanghai by means of case study from the aspects of linguistic,cultural and literary hybridity, to show her excellent bilingual competence andtranslation talents as a bilingual author-translator in the field of translation, and alsoher ease with which she has been traveling freely between two different cultures. Andalso in the light of the postcolonial translation studies, Eileen Chang’s translation ofThe Sing-song Girls of Shanghai, as a typical hybrid text, gives salience to the featuresof both the Chinese and the English languages and cultures, and it also helps affirm thecultural differences between China and the west and contributes to the disseminationof Chinese culture and literature all over the world. The conclusions can be made fromthe above research that Eileen Chang is an excellent literary translator; that in thetranslation of the fiction, Eileen Chang has adopted domestication and foreignizationto deal with the linguistic, cultural and literary elements of the two cultures to makethe translated version in a hybrid state, which helps to promote cross-culturalcommunication. From the perspective of translation studies, this thesis is intended topave the way for the comprehensive research into Eileen Chang. |
