The Effect Of Font Size On Narcissists’ Implicit Attitude

Now many scholars from domestic and foreign study narcissism from the perspective of social cognitive, mainly concentrating on their self, self management strategy, attribution way and interpersonal relationships. A few studies of cognitive process and implicit research of narcissism have been introduced to research in narcissists’focus bias and their implicit importance.From the viewpoint of psychodynamics, narcissism emphasized the relationship between objects, namely unconscious awareness of self, others and relative relationship between them(Klein,1952; Kohut,1966). Since the narcissists think they are more important than others, and the relative important feelings is dynamic for them to maintain a positive, exaggerated concept of self, the narcissists have a positive implicit attitude towards themselves than towards others. Research proves that size affect individual to judge the quality of the object (Lakoff&Johnson,1999). Pride, self-reinforcing can also be operated through body size (Tracy&Robins,2004). These research results have demonstrated "big is good" such a universal truth, and the feasibility by operation "size" to influence of narcissists’ implicit attitude.In order to probe the cognitive process in a classified task, we designed two studied using a manipulative technique to affect the narcissists’ self importance.In study1, we choose words materials to study words’ size, category and the interaction between them on high school students in a classified task, namely how different level of narcissism react on the task.In study2, we use IAT paradigm to study their implicit attitude, with the same font size manipulative technique. In this experiment we try to figure out whether font size have effect on narcissists’ implicit attitude.The results of the study show that:(1) When the materials are presented in big font size, students with high narcissism level classified significantly faster than students with high narcissism level.(2) Interaction between font size, category and narcissistic level is significant. The high narcissism students’ classify significant slow when positive words are presented in small font size, negative word are presented in big font size. But for low narcissism these did not exist.(3) When materials are presented with the big font size, high narcissists’implicit attitude towards themselves are significant positive than their attitude towards others. But when materials are presented with the small font size, the implicit self attitude didn’t have many difference between high and low narcissism group.
