At present, most studies on English-Chinese translation strategies and skills just focus on how to make the change in practice but fail to illustrate under what circumstances can it be applied to. Due to intrinsic features and patterns of expressions of both original and target languages, translation needs to dig the thorough essence of the text instead of simple word-for-word correspondence. Thus based on the study of text analysis on translation application, this thesis exerts the theory of cohesion and coherence and properly seeks to understand source language semantically and logically, as a result of which reconstructs the target language and guides translation practice. As one of the seven standards of textuality, cohesion is the first element in generating a text and plays a significant role in textual translation. Whether the quality of translation, understanding of the source text, and reconstructing the target text are proper or not is closely related to the cohesion of text. Lexical cohesion is one of the most common cohesive devices, of which reiteration is the most straightforward manifestation. Based on contrastive analysis of English and Chinese texts, this thesis explores similarities of reiteration between English and Chinese. Besides, with English emphasizing hypotaxis and Chinese parataxis, when translating into Chinese, translators often need to reconstruct reiteration chain. This thesis discovers that by stringing up visible cohesive devices, translators can decode the semantic meaning of the original text and reconstruct the reiteration chain to form a smooth target text. In this way, can translators be no more voice transmitters, but the proper mediators to bridge the endings of two languages. The significance of this research is listed in the following three aspects. Firstly, it contributes to the theoretical construction. Traditional text analysis neglects the comparison and categorization of cohesive devices, which make the in-depth semantic analysis more effective. Secondly, it enriches translating strategies. This thesis begins with studies from cohesion and coherence theory, innovatively analyzes and refines reiteration chain of source language, and properly reconstructs the chain to form final elegant translated text. Last but not the least, this thesis discovers some general principles and modes which can be applied in English teaching, reading, translation texture, contrastive studies of English and Chinese, translation criticism etc.
