As a famous Northern Dynasty ballads which was widely read for thousands of years in China, Mulan Poem infuenced generatins of Chinese people with the thouguts of "Loyalty" and "Filial Piety". Walt Disney Corporation of the USA adapted it into a cartoon movie named Mulan, and endowed Mulan with brand-new cultural connotation and modern explication. The movie brought huge economic benefits for Walt Disney Corporation, meanwhile, it provided a case study material for comparative literature researchers. So far, main researches of academia focus on Mulan’s deformations comparing to Mulan Poem and different cultural sources between China and western areas in the rear. In fact, as the creater and patron of Mulan, Walt Disney Corporation’s manipulation to it can not be ignored. This thesis tries to explore Walt Disney Corporation how to create "American Mulan" by western ideology and its poetics tradition as well as whether it belongs to cultural utility on the basis of present researches. The significance of this thesis lies in the appeal to new cognition of cultural utility in the context of globalization.By using Belgian translation theorist Andre’.Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory, this thesis presents Walt Disney Corporation’s manipulation process from the dimensionality of patron, ideology and poetics tradition. The dissertation divides into three chapters. With the analysis method of mass popular movie’s creator and Andre’.Lefevere’s concept of patron, Chapter One demonstrates that Walt Disney Corporation performs as both rewriter and patron by definition of these two identities.Following the train of thoughts "Ideology—Walt Disney Corporation’s manipulation—Deformation from Mulan Poem to Mulan", Chapter Two discusses Primitivism, Individualism and Feminism in modern American cultural values how to promote and propel Mulan by the role of patron. Meanwhile, it explores how the theme of "Loyalty" and "Filial Piety" in Mulan Poem was changed into American Individualism values in Mulan and how the perfect traditional Confucian woman image of Mulan in Mulan Poem was replaced with a new independent and rebellious modern American woman image in Mulan.Chapter Three, which is also innovation of this thesis, firstly summaries Walt Disney Corporation’s unique poetics tradition formed in its creation history of cartoon movies lasting for more than a hundred years. Then, it analyses how the poetics tradition was brought into the plots, roles and expression techniques of Mulan, as well as how the traditional Confucian poem was finally recreated into American popular movie with distinguishing Disney features. This dissertation will present the deformation from Mulan Poem to Mulan by combing Walt Disney Corporation’s manipulation process, with the purpose of appealing to more meditation of transculturation.
