Poetry, with a long history, has an indispensable role in the development ofliterature. As the invaluable treasure for the people all over the world, the translationof poetry has caused a great concern both home and abroad. As the basic unit and themost common art methodology of poetry, images are the keys to expound theprofound mystery of poetry. In other words, the understanding of images becomes themain aspects of imagery, style and aesthetics values of the poetry. The unique characteristics of poetry make the translation of it unprecedentedlydifficult, as a result of which, translatability and untranslatabiliy become the mostimportant and hottest topic in the filed of translation study. The success of thetranslation of poetry depends on the successful reproduction of images. Aestheticsvalue on translation is absolutely necessary as the standard of translation, which istrue during the process of appreciation, as it is said in Xu Yuanchong’s“ThreeBeauties”(三美) and Qian Zhongshu’s“transmigration”(化境). However, aestheticson translation has certain limitations so far as the reproduction of images is concerned, for it is subjective and absolutely different for different people. This thesis will studythe translation of poetry and the reproduction of images based on the RelevanceTheory, which regards translation as a special kind of communication. And in thisspecial kind of communication, optimal relevance will be achieved in two processes:the original and the translator and the translator and the target, which will lead to thesame contextual effects. In chapter one, this thesis briefly describes the necessity and aims of the studyof the reproduction of images. In chapter two, the valuable thoughts of RelevanceTheory, aesthetics on translation and poetry images are introduced. Chapter three andchapter four are the body part of the thesis. First, this thesis compares the aestheticsand Relevance Theory, and chapter four gives a further discussion on the case study ofXu Yuanchong and Ezra Pond to attest what have been said above. With the premiseof the achieving the optimal relevance and contextual effects to the greatest extend,“three beauties”and“transmigration”can be seen as the guideline to resemble theoriginal. And chapter five will conclude the thesis in two aspects, which is the mainfindings of the paper and limitations of it.
