Based on the theories of foreignization and poetic images, this thesis analyzes the poetic images by Wang Wei and advocates that foreignization should be employed as the preferable approach to retain the flavor and poetic conception of the poems by Wang Wei without changing the lingual and cultural differences between the source language (SL) and the target language (TL).Foreignization and domestication is a pair of important concepts and two specific approaches used to deal with cultural factors in translation. Foreignization refers to source-language-culture-oriented translation, which strives to preserve as much as possible the original flavor in order to retain the foreignness of the source language culture. Domestication refers to target-language-culture-oriented translation in which expressions acceptable in target language culture are exploited in order to make the translated texts suitable for the target readers. "Image" is the representation through language of sense experience that combines subjective "yi"(emotion) and objective "xiang"(object), and it plays an extremely important role in verse composition and appreciation. This thesis undertakes comparative analysis between foreignization and domestication, discussing the theories on image translating which are put forward by Liu Zhongde (刘重德), Ezra Pound and Weng Xianliang (翁显良), and advocating that foreignization should be employed as the preferable approach to transform the cultural connotation of poetic images and to enable the better understanding and appreciation of the thoughts and lives of foreign people.As one of the most outstanding representative of the poets who are famous for their landscape and pastoral poems, Wang Wei enjoys equal reputation with other...
