That’s why I am going to sort these suicidal figures out and analyze them in order to fill the gaps.By comparing all the suicidal figures in the novels of1920s, we can find out that the most obvious figures are students, traditional women and revolutionaries. Among them, the number of the students is the most. Young writers loved to express their confusion through shaping the images of students. At the time, traditional women were selected to be the protagonists of tragedies and the tools to unveil the ugliness of society. Revolutionaries, who suffered more than others, had their special attractions. Also, other people in poor condition made the readers reflect a lot for their living condition.After that, this thesis takes an analysis from the view angles of narration. The fiction genre changes, the narrative effect would be different, though each genre has its own strengths and weaknesses. In the novel, the suicidal figures are eye-catching since they connect to death, no matter how big a part they play or when they kill themselves. Authors always feel sympathy to the suicidal figures, and the reproach and satirization will be slight. All the figures implicate deep significances for us to feel and think.Digging harder into the suicidal figures, we can chase down the psychological significances. The characters kill themselves by drowning, hanging, poisoning and so on, each of them has their own meanings. What we need to pay more attention to are self-mutilating and forcing to die, those can imply the emptiness of people and exposure the way words taking lives. Meanwhile, suicidal figures can reflect the problem of history. By studying the images, we can find out that Chinese people are trapped in the poor national condition. While we are reading these novels, we can see the aesthetic values of tragedies, which will make us much more sensible and noble. In conclusion, the suicidal figures in the novels of1920s are gorgeous. Though there are not that much of masterpieces, they join together and strongly intensify the effects of expression, which make these sad words a reflection of Chinese people’s spirits in1920s.
