In Taiwan literary circle, Li Ang is definitely a woman writer with creative spirit. Since she stepped into theliterary arena with her famous novel the Season of Flowers, her continuous creation and great achievements arewell received by the readers and critic from the mainland. She is different from the woman writers of her age, inthat she is brave, persistent and not confined by any rules. She is courageous to challenge the conventions andunreasonable social reality. Most of her works are the reflection on the sorrow of women and the awakening offeminism in various genres through her brave exploration on women, human nature and social problems.This thesis is consisted of four chapters to analyze Li Ang’s novel. It adopts the methodology of extensivetextual reading to have a discussion about Li Ang’s works. Chapter One is the description of the regionalcharacteristic. Lugang is not only Li’s hometown but also the resource of her creation and even her spiritualhometown. Writers are apt to dig out subjects from their familiar environment and create excellent or at least notmediocre works. And the influence of their hometown and childhood is definitely an indispensible “sensitivecircle”. Chapter Two is the discussion about the growth of women. Growth is a process of both sorrow and joy,which is presented in Li’s novel as a unique artistic charm. Chapter Three is the discussion about the sex andpolitics concerned about women. The description about sex is one of the distinctive features of Li’s novel. Sheemploys the sex as a unique mirror, discussing others with advantage of the sex and challenging the structure ofthe power and politics. Chapter Four is an analysis on the artistic characteristics of Li’s novel, i.e. narrative style,various forms of presentation and rich and careful portrait on the characters.
