With economic, political, social and cultural development, foreign exchanges are becoming popular in China. The demands for professional interpreters are urgently increased, more and more Chinese are visiting to overseas for business, promotion, international conferences and symposia. As an important way of cross-cultural communication, interpretation has played a vital role which could not be neglected. While on field interpreting, the one of the challenges to interpreter is lexical vacancy. Lexical vacancy is defined as the absences of ready-made equivalent lexical units are either in the target language or in the source language. Its meaning, in the target language, can only be indicated through the free combination of words.Essentially, cultural vacancy phenomenon is caused by differences between cultures. China and west has a long history with brilliant and profound culture. During their cultural development, abundant lexemes and expressions with unique cultural connotation and even some of them are only used in their own culture. It is really a challenge for the interpreters and translators to find equivalent words and expressions, which are full of cultural connotation or newly prevalent in another culture without causing misunderstanding during communication. This thesis aims to better recognize the phenomenon of lexical vacancy and find out how to use different strategies to fill or eliminate the lexical vacancy when doing the field interpretation. Therefore, the study of vacancy phenomenon and relevant strategies can improve intercultural exchange between English and Chinese people and bring colorful alien culture to both cultures. Besides, it helps to improve the interpreting effect, expand the intercultural sense, and promote the integrity of the theoretical system. For a better statement, the thesis is divided into six parts:the first part introduces the objective and content; the second part will present the definition and classification of the vacancy phenomenon; The relationship between the lexical vacancy and non-equivalence will be discussed in the third part.; the fourth part of the paper is going to introduce the difference between translation and interpreting and the translatability of lexical vacancy; the fifth part of the paper discusses the strategies of dealing lexical vacancy and the last part will collect extracts quoted at press conference from electronic journals and network media. With knowledge on vacancy theory, the author will analyze in detail the way how interpreters deal with vacancy between words and expressions in practical work.
