With the increasing indepth of research on consecutive interpreting, thenecessity of using symbols has been widely accepted by interpreters. But what is thecorrelation between symbols and accuracy of CI? This thesis, based on the study ofthe previous researchers, attempts to find out the answer to the question.Starting from function of note-taking in consecutive interpreting, this thesis hasa review of achievement previously made on symbols in interpreting. The theoreticalframework is Gile’s Effort Model. Gile believes that the total efforts required byinterpreting tasks must be fewer than those of the interpreter’s processing capacity. The effective use of symbols reduces time and energy consumed during note-noting,sparing more efforts for listening, analyzing and short-term memory, and thusimprove the quality of interpreting as a whole. However, Effort Model does not clarify the correlation between symbols andaccuracy of CI, which leads to the experiment, the main part of this paper. Thesubjects of the experiment are8junior college students and8second-year graduatestudents of SISU; the experiment involves questionnaire, notes of the subjects andrecord of their reproduction. The variance is the proficiency in using symbols of thetwo groups. Adopting descriptive statistical analysis and the inferential statisticalanalysis, the experiment result leads to the following conclusion:Within a certain degree, the use of symbols are conducive to better accuracy ofreproduction, but the number of symbols used and accuracy of CI is not positivelyrelated; on the other hand, the cognitive connotation of symbols for the interpreter isintimately related to accuracy of CI. It is suggested that enough importance should beattached to the systemacity of symbols at the initial stage of interpreting learning, withthe students welcomed to establish their own symbol system. It is the writer’s hopethat the experimental research shall shed certain light on interpreting teaching.
