Application Of Public Speaking Strategies And Techniques In Consecutive Interpretation

Public speaking and consecutive interpretation are two importantcommunication forms in today’s society. They are also compulsory courses forEnglish majors. This thesis is to discuss the application of public speakingstrategies and skills in consecutive interpretation and point out that this applicationcan help to improve the performance of interpretation.To prove this argument, the author of this thesis conducts the literaturereview in the first chapter, discussing the definition, the features and theassessment of consecutive interpretation; the definition and the criteria forassessment of public speaking; the general review of public speaking practice ininterpretation studies at home and abroad. This chapter is a prelude of the wholethesis.Chapter Two constructs the theoretical supports of the whole thesis,explaining why public speaking strategies and skills can be applied in consecutiveinterpretation. This chapter reaches the conclusion that public speaking andconsecutive interpretation share similarities in terms of communication process,required competencies and roles of public speaker and interpreter.Chapter Three mainly discusses how public speaking strategies and skillscan be applied in consecutive interpretation from two aspects: before interpretationtasks and in performing interpretation tasks. Before interpretation tasks, the authordiscusses the audience analysis, including the speaker analysis enlightened byaudience analysis and the situation analysis. In performing interpretation tasks,effective listening, note-taking, effective delivery and overcoming of stage frightare involved.
