Manipulation Of Ideology On Translation Workshops Of The Tang Dynasty

The Tang Dynasty is believed to have been one of the most powerful andinfluential of ancient China and was the strongest and the most powerful country of itstime in the world. Sutra translation could be so successful in the Tang Dynasty isgreatly credited to the translation workshop which refers to translation organizations oftranslating Buddhist scriptures in ancient China. The translation workshop becameincreasingly important and matured through change of dynasties. However, the mostcomplete and productive translation workshop was believed to be in the Tang Dynasty.This thesis studies translation workshops of the Tang Dynasty from the perspective ofideology by analyzing the interrelationship between ideology and translationworkshops and how ideology manipulated translation workshops. It is intended thatthis thesis make some contribution to the study of translation workshops of ancientChina, especially that of the Tang Dynasty and to learn certain useful experience tobetter direct current translation activities and the development of today’s translationorganizations.This thesis has borrowed André Lefevere’s Manipulation Theory as guidance. Allanalyses will be based on methods such as textual research, comparative analyses andinduction. Through the analyzes of the manipulation of social mainstream ideology,group ideology and personal ideology on translation workshops of the Tang Dynasty,this thesis puts forward that these three types of ideology manipulated the selection ofmaterials, the division and the arrangements of the translation workshop, the locationof the translation workshop, the meaning transfer of translated texts, the assignment ofpositions of all translators and the translation strategies that were used in thetranslation workshop. Under these influences and manipulations, translationworkshops of the Tang Dynasty had edged out all translation workshops of otherDynasties to reach its peak.
