China and Vietnam are neighbors. All along, the two countries have closeexchange and communication in politics, economics and culture. Hence, a betterunderstanding the Vietnamese culture will help us better communicate with theVietnamese. The ballad and common saying, is the cultural treasures of a nation.They are the language accumulated and extracted from the ethnic groups’long-term use in their life, with distinctive ethnic characteristics and strong culturalconnotations.Since ancient times Vietnam has been an agricultural country featuringrice-growing as the main agricultural form, which takes rice culture as theVietnamese national characteristics. The present study aims at the Vietnameseballad and common saying, focusing on analysis rice culture existing in the balladand common saying. In this way, a better understanding of the Vietnamese cultureas well as a better communication with the Vietnamese would be achieved.This thesis is composed of three parts. The first part analyzes the meaning ofthe astronomical and geographical ballad and common saying. The second partanalyzes the meaning of the rice-growing ballad and common saying. The thirdpart analyzes the meaning of the farm cattle ballad and common saying. It has tobe pointed that each part respectively provides an analysis of the rice cultureembodied in them.
