| With the rapid development of the economy and intensification of the reform and opening-up in China, the biggest city in Central China—Wuhan City—also has a booming development. So it is a tendency that Wuhan City becomes more and more internationalized. However, the development of the first "name card" of Wuhan’s internationalization—public signs and their translation—falls behind. Therefore, it is of great significance to deepen the research of public signs translation in Wuhan. In view of this, the present thesis attempts to conduct an in-depth research on the translation of public signs with public sign translation in Wuhan as an example of case study. The thesis first presents the definition, features and functions of public signs. Then it makes a survey of public sign translation in Wuhan, and explores its existing problems, which involve such problematic aspects of linguistic errors, cultural errors, non-standardization and lack of English translation. As to the causes of and solutions to these problems, the thesis does the research mainly from the levels of the government, translators, and manufacturing unit of public signs, macroscopically and microscopically. At the end of the thesis, it is pointed out that the translation of public signs is a systematic work which calls for the cooperation from all sides. It is hoped that the present thesis can shed some fresh insight into the translation of public signs. |
