Problem Analysis And Solutions On C-E Translation Of Warning Public Signs In Taiyuan

A public sign is a special kind of writing form. It is a window to show the city to its citizens or even foreigners, so the translation of public signs is of great importance. In China, although public signs have long been used for directing, warning, explaining in public places, examples of inappropriate or wrong translation of public signs can be seen almost anywhere. What’s more, there lacks researches on a specific type of public signs, the writer of this paper thinks it is of great value to do a research on warning signs, as they are most commonly and practically used. Based on the predecessors’study of public signs translation, this paper investigates the present English translation of warning public signs in Taiyuan, and discusses the types of improper or wrong translation among these signs. Moreover, this paper explores some principles to be followed and gives some suggestions in the practice of sign translation. It is hoped that this paper will arouse people’s attention on the significance and standardization of sign translation, and can help build a more harmonious and civilized city.
