Analysis Of The Vocabulary Meaning Loss In C-E Interpretation

The paper focuses on the causes of and solutions to the problem of vocabularymeaning loss during Chinese-English interpretation on basis of a case study of PremierWen Jiabao’s Press Conference2011. Vocabulary meaning loss may arise frominterpretation process, or may be caused by language or cultural factors. During theinterpretation process, certain part of the meaning of some word or phase may be discardedor misinterpreted by the interpreter as a result of such factors as their subjectiveinvolvements, the language differences between English and Chinese or the culturalbarriers. The solutions to this problem are proposed in three aspects, namely, paying duerespect to the source text, giving more emphasis to the language itself and enhancingcultural awareness in this regard. Paying due respect to the source text is to render, as muchas possible, the complete meaning of the words and phrases in source language. Givingmore emphasis to the language itself means that more attention is given to the peculiarityof the Chinese words in their contexts. And enhancing cultural awareness refers to theimprovement of the cultural sensitivity in the interpretation process so as to achieve bettercross-cultural communication.
