A Defamiliarization Perspective To The Study Of Translation Of Li Qingzhao’s Ci

Tang shi. Song ci, Yuan qu. Ming and Qing fictions are the treasures of classical Chinese literature. Among them. Song Ci stands out for its beauty in forms and lyric rhyme. In the literary world of Ci dominated by men, Li Qingzhao stands out by her extraordinary talent and she was deemed the founder of Wanyue School. As one of the most important Song Ci poetess in history, Li Qingzhao has Shu Yu Ci which has been studied home and abroad.The author of this thesis tends to apply Defamiliarization theory proposed by Russian formalist Shklovsky as theoretical guide, Li Qingzhao’s Ci and their different translation versions as objects for analysing. Through comparing those versions, this thesis tries to explore, on the one hand, how translators keep the original defamiliarization effect in translated versions; on the other hand, how to make defamiliarization effect by translators’ own will. The author is in the hope to test the applicability of defamiliarization in guiding the translation of Li Qingzhao’s Ci.Defamiliarization, though a technique for literature writing, has a close relationship with translation. In literature writing, writers should defamilirize the familiar things to the readers in order to arouse their interest and curiosity, prolong their length of perception to discover the beauty of art. Translation, as Andre Lefevere said, is a kind of rewriting. Therefore, the technique applied in literature writing can be applied in literature translation. What’s more, translation itself bears the quality of defamiliamess. It carries source culture to meet with target culture, and to the target culture. it is indeed a process of receiving the unfamiliar.This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter contends mainly three parts. One is an introduction of the theme, significance, method and structure of the thesis; second part deals with the theory background of the thesis------defamiliarization. its definition, features and its application in literature translation; third part gives a retrospective study on Li Qingzhao Ci’s translation, including the introduction of Li Qingzhao’s ci and translation study of her ci home and abroad. The second chapter, the third chapter, the fourth chapter and the fifth chapter comprise the main body of this thesis. They study how defamiliarization effect realised in translation versions from grammatical.rhetoric and imagery perspectives with case study. The last chapter is the conclusion. it summarizes the main points in the previous chapter and proposes suggestions for further research.
