Both "Records of the Historian" and "History of Han Dynasty" are historical andliterature works with great importance in China. Two books share the similarities inrecording the history from Liu Bang’s establishing a nation to the late period of HanWudi Emperor’s ruling. When dealing with this period of history, historian Ban Guhas followed the recording descriptions of another historian Si Maqian. As a result, alarge number of variations can be found in some chapters of these two books.Variation is a common but significant linguistic phenomenon in ancient books. However, nobody has made a comprehensive study on exegetical value of variationsin "Records of the Historian" and "History of Han Dynasty" so far. This thesis tries toanalyze the exegetical value of variations in "Records of the Historian" and "Historyof Han Dynasty" from three aspects: Firstly, study on the exegetical value ofvariations in philology, which results in the differences among Gujinzi (characters inancient and modern time), Yitizi (variant characters) and Tongjiazi (interchangeablecharacters). Secondly, study on the exegetical value of variations in lexicology, whichresults in the differences among synonyms, cognates and unbroken words. Finally, study on the exegetical value of variations syntactics, which results in words orderand some special syntactic relations in ancient time.
