Death is the inevitable result of all life. Death is also the eternal theme in literary creation. In Chinese and foreign literature works, words about death can be found everywhere. In contemporary Chinese literary field, Yu Hua is one of the writers who focus on description of death. It can be found not only in his works in1980s but also the ones after his transformation in1990s. This article attempts from the perspective of death narrative to analyze the novels by Yu Hua.Yu Hua’s works have the courage to face death. Based on his life observation of death for all states, living conditions were portrayed boldly and sharply with his imagination. In Yu Hua’s works, death was accompanied with spewing blood and violence,and the horrible scene and the absurd unruly way of death are also the mass-tone attune of the pioneer novels. But violence, horror and absurd are just the angle and the way he pondered over the life, the superficial phenomenon. Yu Hua focused on the philosophical level, with the aid of the end of death to think about the end of death extremely. Death, on the one hand, is the end of life, on the other hand, it can alert the living people.The death of the novels by Yu Hua continued to the works after the transformation in1990s. Unlike the pioneer time, in this period, tender feelings and pity were added to the death of his works. He was no longer face the world coldly, but tried to seek a way to relieve and to understand. Although the threat of death and the hardships of life in the novel can be found everywhere, his narrative about the life state under the heavy stress showed perseverance and greatness of human nature. The author turned indifference in the period of the pioneer to attention to the spirit of the survival of human beings and the significance of human beings’survival. Yu Hua’s works showed the greatness of living wisdom of the most ordinary and menial people in China.With development of times and changing of the age, the author’s ideas change becomes more and more mature. So to Yu Hua’s two different period of death’s writing, we can’t say which one is better or which one is worse. The creation of the 1980s is mainly to face death itself, and in the1990s after the transofrmation,the works are facing with living itself. Without the coldness of the novel narrative style, it would not show the gentle and heavy of his late work. Life and death are in the different ends of life. But Yu Hua well mixed them together. It is the very charm of novels by Yu Hua.
