Genre concept has been so prevalent in literature, sociology, and rhetoric for a long time and the concept of Genre Analysis represents a broad area of English language research. Business News Reports in the Press (BNPs) and Business Press Articles (BPAs) are two types of business English journalism with distinctive features in many aspects. The study aims to find out the specific generic structures, language strategies, communicative purposes of the sub-genre of BNPs and BPAs respectively as well as the reasons of these dissimilarities.By analyzing the genre, the study explores the main generic characteristics from the aspects of moves, phraseology and readability of the texts excerpted from the latest publication of China Daily, Beijing Review, BBC and Financial Times, the representatives of BNPs and BPAs at home and abroad. The author adopts qualitative analysis based on Swale and Bhatia’s ESP genre theory to formulate the move structures, quantitative analysis with the help of ConcGram tool and the Flesch Readability Formula to find out the phraseology and readability features of BNPs and BPAs. Through the research, the author finds that BNPs and BPAs do differ much in generic structures and language strategies. The generic structure governs the language use, and the language strategy also reflects the generic feature. By comparison, it is found that the overall style of BPAs is more difficult and professional while that of BNPs is easier and more casual. Specifically speaking, BPAs have more complicated generic stucture, more difficult phraseology and lower readability level than BNPs. Therefore, BPAs require higher English capacity, bigger business vocabulary and more professional business knowledge. The study also finds the different communicative purposes and readerships of BNPs and BPAs lead to genre dissimilarities for most part. In business English language teaching and learning area, the study is significant for the English business news reading and teaching in some degree.
