Recent years have been witnessing more and more people involved in the translation from classical Chinese literature works into modern English. Among those, the publication of Library of Chinese Classics serves as a good example. These translated works play a positive role in the dissemination of Chinese culture. The book Selected Tang Dynasty Stories, translated by Yan Xianyi and Gladys Yang, is included within the Library of Chinese Classics. Therefore, we can conclude that (popular) stories written in both Tang and Song Dynasties are regarded as classical Chinese literature works. Here, the paper is about translating Tales of Lady the Ninth, which was to depict a faithful and virtuous lady as well as a brave and wise soldier. According to Reiss’s text typology, this story is informative as well as expressive. Translating the story shall employ the strategies of both documentary translation and instrumental translation, to achieve its intended purpose. |
