An Analysis Of E-C Film Subtitle Translation Problems And Their Countermeasures

With the deepening of the reform and opening policy, more and more western movies have entered into China. E-C film subtitle translation has appeared. However, there are still many problems in E-C film subtitle translation. Research on E-C film subtitle translation problems and their countermeasures can improve such translations so as to help audience understand original English films better.This thesis, on the basis of Text Typology, Action Theory, Skopostheorie and Function plus Loyalty, analyzes and compares four subtitle translation versions of the American film Inception, to find out specific problems in E-C film subtitle translations. After that, some countermeasures are proposed against those problems. Other modified E-C film subtitle translation versions are compared with their original versions verify the feasibilities of those countermeasures.Through research, this paper finds out such E-C translation problems as (1) misuse of words and phrases; (2) inconsistency of Character’s names and jargons; (3) redundancy of information; (4) deficiency of culture information; (5) improper approach of domestication and foreignization; (6) Mistranslation of idioms. The related countermeasures are proposed as (1) choice of proper words; (2) reference of official translation and annotation; (3) deletion of some unnecessary oral language;(4) supplement of transcultural knowledge; (5) free translation according to plot; (6) transfer of Chinese four-character phrases. These countermeasures can bring about two effects:(1) meanings of the subtitles can be conveyed according to the source movie; (2) the audience can understand movies more easily.
