On Salt and Iron is our first monograph about salt and iron problems.it is rigorous andunified. It is a book written by Huan Kuan of the Western Han Dynasty according to“Thediscussion about salt and iron”. It records a lot of general spoken language of that time,reflecting the historical outlook of Chinese language at that period. It has magnificent corpusvalue.The Discussion of the Synonyms in On Salt and Iron is an important topic about vocabularystudy in Qin and Han Dynasties,Its purpose is to sort out all synonyms in Discussion About Saltand Iron ,sum up the relationship and the corresponding theory rule.This thesis is divided into four chapters:Preface part is general talk about author and versions.It reviews the research aboutsynonyms and Salt and Iron, and shows the value and significance about The Synonyms of TheDiscussion About Salt and Iron.Chapter I: Include Synonym of Salt and Iron according the research of the theories andmethods.Summing up all Synonyms, there are 483 notional words,159 noun words,257 verbwords,67 adjective words.Chapter II:Format of synonyms in Salt and Iron.Through the research about the book,wesummarized the 5 kinds of synonyms format.ChapterⅢis synonym discrimination in On Salt and Iron. Referring to Mr. Wang Ning’sthree discriminating ways.This chapter mainly talks about how to discriminate the meaningdifferences of words within the same sememe.ChapterⅣare the characteristics and formation of the synonyms in On Salt and Iron. Thecharacteristics are manifested as follows: the increase of polysyllabic words; the occurrence ofnew words and meanings; some new structural features such as at least one same morpheme insome synonyms phrases and same morpheme with opposite word order for some synonymsphrases. Some factors inside and outside the language system have caused the characteristics ofsynonyms in On Salt and Iron. Factors inside the language system mainly include the extensionof word meaning and the needs of figures of speech. Word meaning extension is the major wayof extending new meaning from a base meaning. Some words which have no meaningrelationship may become synonyms through meaning extension. The sememe emerging from thefigures of speech has been fixed through a long-term use and become one part of the word meaning, so the word generating the rhetoric item may become synonyms with other words as aresult. The outside factor is that it is the often the case that those words which people use toexpress similar things in the objective world become synonyms.
