Analysis On The Amman Urban Refugees Issue

The refugee is the hot topic around the world. The Palestinianrefugees and the Iraqi refugees are the major refugee groups inmiddle east area. The refugee settlement issues of the middleeast area plays a great role in regional stability and the socialpeace and development. The formation of the middle eastrefugees mainly caused by war. The war not only makes peopledisplaced all around as refugees but has had an impact on hostcountries where refugees concentrated in. After world warⅡ, aseries of middle east war which was resulted in the Zionistmovement changed the regional ethnic group constitution, andarose the Palestinian refugee waves. After the Iraqi war in 2003,Jordan experienced another flow of refugees. The massive influxof these refugees make a big strain on their neighbor countries,especially on Jordan.Owing to the relatively easing policy the government of Jordanmade on refugee settlement and protection, a lot of refugees fromneighboring areas, especially Palestine and Iraq, came here toseek refuge. Amman, the capital of Jordan, became the first placefor refugees to gather. The influx of Iraqi and the presence ofPalestinian refugees had the huge influence on Jordan’s economy,society and the internal and external policies. In the meantime, they had a great impact on urbanization of Jordan, Amman inparticular. The refugees became the hidden danger dimensions ofthe development of Amman. It is because of the periodical wave ofrefugees, the Amman city has changed greatly. Refugees are notonly closely associated with the urban development security andeconomic security but also placing a great strain on the urbandemographic structure, urban planning and living conditions.Meanwhile, as the marginalized group who living in urban, thesurvival situation and the future of refugees in Amman goes handin hand with the policies of Jordan government and internationalcommunity. How to ensure the refugees’ legal status and therights they enjoy in host countries as well as the harmonyrelationship between the two, it will be the important problem thatthe international community should be faced.This paper will be limited to discussing the Amman urbanrefugees issues and the relation between refugees and the urbandevelopment. This paper from the perspective of refugee toresearch the focus of development of Amman. It will be concretedresearch the development process of Amman refugee waves andthe influences of refugees on this city. At the same time, themeasures that local government made and the efforts thatinternational community did will be pointed out in this paper.
