Qing Dynasty is a great turning point of the Chinese calligraphyhistory. Public aesthetic tendency is focused on the texture quality inthat time. The school of thought“Qianjia”is leading the calligraphyarea, which caused the weakness of tie study and the popularity ofepigraphy. This made the stele study develop quite fast. The researchof the new techniques and aesthetic promoted most of thecalligraphists take stele study as the essential basis.Zhao Zhiqian is the most important pioneer of the stele studytheory in the Qing Dynasty. He combined the wildness of the northstele style which is advocated greatly in Qing Dynasty with thedelicate of the tie study so as to create a style which is natural andlively. He not only created“weitikaishu”and“weitixingshu”which isfull of his own outstanding characters, but also put the calligraphyinto“zhuan shu”and“li shu”works. He led a brand new way to the lateQing Dynasty calligraphy and stele study. Zhao Zhiqian gained greatachievements in“poem, calligraphy, painting, seal cutting”. Becauseof his unique ideas and practices, the calligraphists in Qing Dynastyhad different opinions on him, pros and cons.In this paper, according to some research evidence, Zhao Zhiqianwas analyzed comprehensively, deeply and in system. It demonstrated Zhao Zhiqian’s life, study experience, artisticinnovation, aesthetic thoughts through the calligraphy characterchanges in the whole Qing Dynasty as possible as it can be. And it wasdivided into four parts.The first part talks about the exploration of the calligraphic stylein Qing Dynasty. It analyzes the Qing Dynasty historical backgroundsystematically, so it can be known that deal to the government’spromoting and repressing, most scholars had to study on theepigraphy works to lay the foundation for the development of the stelestudy. However the wild changes in Qing Dynasty calligraphy werepraised by most of people after the rise of the north stele theory. Atthe same time, they started to keep going on the way of research inthe techniques and works.The second part of the paper talks about all aspects of his lifeclosely, for example, his intelligence, personality, self-cultivation,and interests. Try to understand the life of Zhao Zhiqian, and also laythe foundation for the below discourse.The third part focuses on the calligraphy experience of ZhaoZhiqian’s. It demonstrates Zhao’s achievements for the artisticcreation in three parts. (A) Zhao Zhiqian is the most outstanding artistin such aspects - Painting, Kaishu, Lishu, Xingshu, Zhuanshu, and sealcutting; (b) His innovative strokes of the structure in such aspects -strokes, structure and layout; (c)The comparison of Zhao Zhiqian’sand Zhang Yuzhao’s calligraphy styles. Using these three aspects ofdiscourse to prove that the formation of Zhao Zhiqian artistic style isan inevitability of social as well as his own unique vision and innovative ideas. He finally achieved his own succsss and alsobecame the benefit of the era in the artistic development.The fourth section discusses the aesthetic ideas and artistic styleof Zhao Zhiqian, specifically analyzes the reasons for the formation ofZhao Zhiqian aesthetic ideas, and in this case Zhao Zhiqian’s uniquepersonal style characteristics of combining tie and stele together hadbeen formed.That’s why we say that Zhao Zhiqian is the best represent of thestele school in calligraphy. He made use of the essential his ancestorhad, and created his own new style, combined the south and northstyles together. Although in his times, it was thought stele study ismore important than tie study, he try to connect them with all theiradvantages. And he did made it!...
