In a broad sense, calligraphy education is aiming at inheriting theskills of writing Chinese words from one generation to another. In anarrow meaning, calligraphy education is a subject of educationwhich is based on calligraphy and pedagogics. The calligraphyeducation in ancient China was almost indispensable in all schoolsand the early calligraphy education was regarded as“learning whatto write”. However, the true breakthrough was made by HongdumenSchool in Han Dynasty and Hongwenguan in Tang Dynasty. From thenon, the calligraphy education was not just simple subject of“learningwhat to write”, but a new level of“learning how to write”.Zhe Jiang Academy of Art founded the major of calligraphy andcarving in 1963 and firstly enrolled students of master’s degree ofcalligraphy in 1979. Capital Normal University was firstly able tocultivate the doctor of creative arts of calligraphy education in 1993and six years later, in 1999, Chinese first art post doctorate wasenrolled here. Calligraphy education became modern and highereducation of calligraphy trended to scaled development. From then on,a set of modern higher education of calligraphy system was foundedin our country. However, the calligraphy education in Chineseelementary and middle schools are not attached importance to.Normal calligraphy education is not included and no full-time teacher for calligraphy is hired, or, sometimes, there are sparetime teachersor someone who is not qualified. Therefore, the current calligraphyeducation in elementary and middle schools is blank. This thesisbased on collected data and research is going to analyze the level ofcalligraphy education in five parts.In the first part, the causing reason of calligraphy education isdiscussed including the effects of imperial examinations oncalligraphy, the art pursuit of ancient people, the needs of currentexaminations of major calligraphy and utility requirements. Thesecond part focuses on the comparison of ancient and currentcalligraphy education. It introduces the content of teaching and thesituation of using textbooks and also analyzes the current situation ofteachers for calligraphy. And the third part is calligraphy education inelementary and middle schools. This thesis based on“TheSuggestions About Extending Calligraphy Education in Elementaryand Middle Schools”which is proposed by Ministry of Education in2011 studies the calligraphy education from children to pupils, fromjunior students to senior students, from outside of schools to inside,and also suggests the way of enlightening, creating and appreciatingcalligraphy.In the fourth part, the problems of specialized calligraphyeducation are discussed. Calligraphy is always the best symbol forChina. It has not only clear outside forms, but also strong insidespirits including moral quality, temperament, accomplishment,thoughts and personalities, which make calligraphy attracting ininner beauty. Calligraphy education in universities are highereducation. The author pays much attention on matriculations, course, characteristics, model of practice and trends of nurturing forcalligraphy major in universities and graduate schools. It is going topropose the author’s attitudes towards the present problems bycomparing in lists. The fifth part studies the calligraphy education insociety including calligraphy education for adults and the old, thetraining for art exhibitions or contests and studios for famous peoplein art. Calligraphy education for adults is regarded as a process ofpromoting educational background, technique for art and majorqualities, and also broadening knowledge and abilities in an adult way.It advances all-round development of persons and balances theindustrial society and spiritual culture. Calligraphy education for theold has its own special features which are fast acceptance, easyunderstanding and great passions. Training for art exhibitions has aclear goal which can stimulate more interested students learn deep.Studios for famous people in art should be researched because theyall have their own characteristics for teaching and leading the trendsof calligraphy development. They broaden the level of calligraphyeducation.The research of calligraphy education has positive effects onall-around spreading calligraphy education and creating new works ofcalligraphy. Finding the problems and solutions in levels ofcalligraphy education guides calligraphy education to develop better.
