From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, metaphor is mapping from a source domain to a target domain. Metaphor is a kind of common phenomenon in languages, reflects the close relationship between language and culture. The usages of metaphor in different languages are very different. With the development of society, the traditional language cannot express new things exactly. Being aware of new linguistic phenomenon becomes much necessary. As one word may has various meanings, people often used to apply conventional expressions. However, a simple word can derive new meaning, in which metaphor theory plays a vital role.In our daily life, amount of new things and new phenomena appear in every walk of life. Some new concepts and new ideas emerge for people to understand the objective world. Language is a direct reflection of society. Every period brings out many words that reflect things, phenomena and people’s thoughts at that time. With the development of society, the emerging new words and expressions attract people’s concern. Many scholars also pay much attention on this linguistic phenomenon and have achieved many fruitful results. By the end of last year, the National Monitoring and Research Center of Language Resource, Commercial Press and other Medias jointly released "2011Annual Chinese Words". The word "Kong" was selected for the annual word in2011. This result arouses the community’s discussion. We can see various social factors from the neologism "Kong" However, in the cultural context of internet, how does it transfer in semantics and cognition from the traditional single meaning?This thesis will take Chinese neologisms "Kong" and "Shai" as examples, exploring the functions of metaphor in the process of their formation and development. It is found that there are mainly three ways for the generation of these neologisms, that is, derivation of meaning, combination and parody. Through this study, we can generally know about metaphor and its roles in couples of sentences. Metaphor not only enriches our lexicon but also enables people to keep infinite perception with limited vocabulary. In turn, with the device of metaphor, we can better accept new words.
