One of the most important problems we should take into consideration is the translation of neologisms in ECLDs. The thesis attempts to analyze the existing problems on the translation of neologisms in ECLDs from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The thesis first provides the definition and classification of neologisms from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, then makes a comparative study of the three ECLDs, and finds that some problems need to be solved, in which the biggest is the inconsistency of semantic information of neologisms. What the thesis intends to do is to provide constructive and proper translation methods and principles to guide the translation of neologisms. The thesis makes an experimental study on the difficulty in cognition of neologisms for Chinese learners of English and what they need about the information neologisms could be provided in ECLDs. Based on the comparative study and results of the experiment, it tries to construct a flow chart about the process of neologisms translation. Accordingly, the thesis provides corresponding methods of neologisms translation for different types of neologisms. Finally, it proposes principles to guide the translation of neologisms and hopes that the suggestions could be beneficiary to future compilation of ECLDs.
