In recent years, due to the increasingly serious employment situation for their graduates, more and more normal schools, which take in the graduates from junior middle school, have difficulty in enrolling good students. Along with this, the present situation of normal school English teaching, which is dominated by traditional grammar-translation method, is now in a predicament. This thesis aims at exploring normal school teachers and students’attitudes towards role-play, the feasibility and effectiveness of role-play activities in normal school English teaching and the problems existing in its practice.On the basis of literature review, this thesis makes an introduction of the theoretical bases of role-play, especially its definition and classifications. The research takes10English teachers in a normal school and387students from two grades as research subjects to study and analyze the application of role-play by combined use of questionnaire, class observation and interview.The research outcome shows that role-play can effectively stimulate normal school students’learning interest and improve their English proficiency. However, there exist some problems like language barrier, low productivity caused by disordered and time-consuming activity, the polarization between top students and backward ones. This thesis, according to the characteristics of normal school students, attempts to put forward some solutions for the problems, which are expected to be helpful to normal school English teaching, especially the role-play applying.
