With the increase of exchange between China and other countries resulting from the reform and opening up programs, China is in great need of people who are familiar with foreign cultures and capable of communicating accurately and appropriately in intercultural situations. English, as an international language, is becoming more and more important in every aspect of society. Under these circumstances, more and more students and adults begin to learn English. As modern language teaching has gradually moved from traditional approaches to various communicative methodologies, students' communicative competence draws more and more attention. Therefore, the research focus of second language acquisition begins to shift from teaching to learning. Parallel to the shift is the increasing interest in learning strategies. From abroad to China a number of researches about language learning strategies show that there are close relations between language learning strategies and language communicative competence. The using of language learning strategies effect the speed and level of language communicative competence acquisition, so attaching importance to the research of their relations has both theoretical and practical significance to the improvement of foreign language teaching theory research and students' language competence. As spoken language communicative competence shows students' language communicative competence directly and obviously, in this thesis, by means of classroom observation and interviews, the author made an investigation into students' classroom oral performance and learning strategies used by English majors in a normal university. The paper assesses the sophomores' spoken language communicative competence from every aspect. The results show that students' communicative competence is still far from satisfactory. Many students ignore their learning strategies in the learning process or just use them unconsciously, let alone adopt appropriate learning strategies to improve their language communicative competence.Based on analysis of students' classroom performance, this thesis aims to explore an effective way of language learning for English majors and raises the Communicative Learning Strategies. From three perspectives: the language application, knowledge structure, and intercultural communication, it divides English efficient learning strategies into three learning strategies: Applied Learning Strategies, Balanced Learning Strategies and Combined Learning Strategies. The thesis also points out that the spirit of communicative learning strategies is "learn to use". Only "learn to use" that can we master English, and then use English to learn new knowledge.
